I used to put a sync code down to one track (provided by, of all things, a Chroma Polaris, which had built-in sync functions.
My first 4-track was a Tascam Porta-05, bought new in 1987. I still haven't made much use of it, but that's going to change in the very near future. I found one of those at a local pawn shop for not much more. I can't see myself using this all the time, but it could be fun every once in a while to get a different flavor. There's a certain quality to the distortion when you slam the tape hard, it's nice. I had the original 424 way back when I was 17, so it's definitely a nostalgia trip.
